Department of Primary School Teaching
Qualification Awarded

Students are awarded with a First Cycle Degree in Elementary Teacher Education Program upon successful completion of all the requirements in the curriculum programme and fulfilling all other requirements for graduation.

First Cycle Degree

Objectives

To contribute to the improvement of knowledge and ability of every kind of oral expression on which preceptorship is built. To provide pre-service teachers with ways of solving problems related to oral expression during both their private and professional life. To teach using the mother tongue accurately, making expressions comprehensible, improving understanding, understanding what type of oral expression is used by the speaker, and what attitude should be displayed in return.

Specific Admission Requirements

Students' admission to higher education is based on a nation-wide Student Selection Examination (YGS-LYS). The examination is held once in a year and is administered by the Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM). Candidates gain access to institutions of higher education based on their composite scores consisting of the scores on the selection examination and their high school grade point averages.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

Students who are currently enrolled in different schools and programs of Mehmet Akif Ersoy University could transfer/enter to the other programs within the University. Transfer rules within the University or between universities are set and monitored by the University Senate according to the regulation named “Regulation on the Transfers between Undergraduate and/or Vocational Programs of Higher Education Institutes, Double Majors, Minor, and credits transfers between the Institutes” published on 24.04.2010 in the official gazette numbered 27561. 
Students can take exemption exam(s) or consideration at the beginning of their academical semester related to their previous educational programs. The students who are considered to be comprehensive for these courses or the students who succeeded the relevant exams can be exempt from the courses offered in the first four semesters.  However, foreign language (English) exemption exams are organized.


Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The requirements for getting First Cycle Degree are to complete (240) ECTS credit hours as diveded below and to fulfill all other requirements.
a.(225) Credit hours covering (62) compulsory courses as detailed in the curriculum.
b.(15) Credit hours covering (5) optional courses as detailed in the curriculum.
c.Maximum study period to receive Second Cycle Degree is 7 years.

Profile of The Programme

The first foundation of the Department of Primary Education dates back to 1965 and 1966.  The two-year- long education system under the Institute of Education title began in 1977-1978 and lasted until 1989-1990 when the period was increased to 4 years.

 The Department of Primary Education trains with 1 professors, 4 associate professors, 4 assistant professors, 6 cturers, 1 research assistants within the Istiklal Campus located in the Örtülü region in Burdur.

A total of 703 students receive education in the department, 566 of them being day time students and 137 evening studying students.

The department provides students with 10 classrooms, 4 lecture theaters, 4 computer laboratories and 3 science laboratories. 

    

Program Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of this program, the students will be able to;
 1-  Comprehends the concepts and relationships between concepts on the basis of qualifications gained in secondary education.
 2-  Apply the most suitable instructions, strategies, methods, and techniques by taking into consideration the developmental characteristics and individual differences of students, as well as the features of the study field
 3-  recognize themselves as individuals, use their creative and strong sides, develop their weaknesses, take responsibility as team members.
 4-  Have enough field information, develop a positive attitude about life-long learning,
 5-  Actively participate in the artistic and cultural activities.
 6-  Plan and implement professional projects and activities for the social environment with a social responsibility of awareness
 7-  Recognize the general geographical and cultural characteristics of Turkey and adapt themselves to the social life.
 8-  Know enough English to follow publications in their field and to communicate with their colleauges
 9-  Know how to use Advanced level of European Computer User License Technologies and use ways of attaining knowledge in an effective way
 10-  Constitute an example for the society with the necessary knowledge, skills, attitude and behaviours required for the teaching profession
 11-  Act in accordance with democracy, human rights, social, scientific, and professional ethical values.
 12-  Be aware of the national and universal sensibilities referred to in the National Education Basic Law.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates

Graduates of Elementary Teacher Education Department have the scientific knowledge and skill to serve as elementary education teachers both for The Ministry of Education Schools and for the private schools. They can teach at elemantary schools.

Access to Further Studies

After completing the first cycle degree programme, it is possible to continue further studies in the second cycle degree programme that can last up to two years. The graduates are awarded as Expert in their field.

Examination Regulations, Assesment and Grading

All exams and other activities are graded based on 100 points. The midterm and final exams represent 40% and 60% of the final grade, respectively. However, a student who gets a grade below 51 out of 100 is graded as FD ve FF. A student obtaining one of the grades of (AA), (BA), (BB), (CB), (CC),  is considered successful in that course. To enter exams, students must meet following requirements that are specifically outlined in “Mehmet Akif Ersoy University Regulation for Vocational and Undergraduate Education and Examination”:

a) Enrolment for the course in question,
b) At least 70% attendance of the course,
c) At least 80% attendance of the practices in the course,
d) Successfully completing practical projects.
Other matters related to learning and exams are given in “Mehmet Akif Ersoy University Regulation for Vocational and Undergraduate Education and Examination”.

Grade conversion is carried out from the 100 grade scale into the Letter grade scale and 4 point grade scale using the table given below for Bachelor’s Degree Programs at Mehmet Akif Ersoy University.

*A student with a (DC) or (DD) grade is considered successful if they had a yearly Grade Point Average (GPA) of minimum 2.00 in the given year.

Graduation Requirements

Elementary Teacher Education major is subject to the following graduation requirements:
1.To be succesful in the the elective and compulsory courses defined in the curriculum which is 240 ECTS.
2.To graduate from the program, GPA must be at least 2.00 (CC).
