First and Second Cycle Degree

Objectives

The basic orientation of this program is to prepare a specialist in Veterinary Medicine and to form their basic competences in educational, psychological and communicative subjects. The study contains the basic courses for Veterinarians which form the vital foundation for handling the critical Veterinary Medical issues after graduation. The knowledge, skills and attitudes gained during the study form basic competences for performing the profession as a Veterinary surgeon. The above mentioned competences guarantee full qualification of the Veterinarians at educational and non-educational institutions.

Specific Admission Requirements

Students' admission to higher education is based on a nation-wide Student Selection Examination (ÖSS). The examination is held once in a year and is administered by the Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM). Candidates gain access to institutions of higher education based on their composite scores consisting of the scores on the selection examination and their high school grade point averages.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

The students of our University have the right to request the recognition of their prior learning at different universities. For the recognition of their prior learning, they should submit their transcript and course contents to the relevant department in the first semester of their registration year.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The requirements for getting First Cycle Degree are to complete 300 ECTS credit hours as divided below and to fulfill all other requirements.
a.296 Credit hours covering 99 compulsory courses as detailed in the curriculum.
b.4 Credit hours covering 2 optional courses as detailed in the curriculum.
c.Maximum study period to receive First Cycle Degree is 8 years.

Profile of The Programme

Mehmet Akif Ersoy University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine was founded in July 3rd 1992, according to 3837 number law, as the Burdur Veterinary Faculty of Akdeniz University. The faculty accepted its first students in the academic year 1996-1997. The faculty started the education with 30 students in the Veterinary Faculty building in downtown of Burdur.  Then, the faculty joined to Mehmet Akif Ersoy University that was founded in March 17th 2006, according to law number 5467, and continued the education until July 2010 in the same building. The faculty was relocated into İstiklal campus in July 2010 and continues the education, training, research and clinical services.

The number of the students in the faculty is 393. There are a total of 56 teaching staffs (13 Prof. Dr., 20 Assoc. Prof Dr. and 23 Asst. Prof. Dr.), two post doc., 21 res. assistants and one biolog currently working full time under 18 departments at the faculty. In addition, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine also has continuing master of philosophy and doctor of philosopyh programs which are carried out within the Institute of Health Sciences.

Since 2008, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine has been registered in the accreditation program of Educational Institutions of the European Veterinary Association (EAEVE) and accreditation process continues. By utilizing all the facilities of the modern education, we are working to provide our students with an education level that competes with the other national and international universities. Our faculty graduates are being employed in the Public and Private Sector.

Program Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of this program, the students will be able to;
 1-  Determine the diagnostic and treatment protocols of the diseases.
 2-  Define animal rights and animal owner rights and knows the laws and regulations related to veterinary medicine, have the ethical values for veterinary profession and defends the ethical values as necessary.
 3-  Plan the most appropriate management for animal enterprises, manage the animal enterprises and the enterprises producing food of animal origins.
 4-  Evaluate the productivity among the animal breeds, use hybridization, selection, artificial insemination as necessary.
 5-  Prepare alternatives of husbandry and nutrition for healthy livestock raising in accordance with various animal species, methods of raising and the expected yield.
 6-  Learn the chemical and biological substances that are used in preventive medicine and the purpose of treatment and their production technologies.
 7-  Check the hyigenic production of animal origin food that are manufactured for human consumption and also the presentation to consumption, and performs the final check.
 8-  Detect and identify the contagious and noncontagious factors causing the diseases in animals.
 9-  Diagnose every type of animal illness and treat the diagnosed illnesses using all the methods for a physician (interpret the results of the diagnostic methods, drugs or surgical practices)
 10-  In communication with professional collaborators, produce solution to the common problems at the regional and national levels and participate to professional activities to increase his/her veterinary professional knowledge.
 11-  Follow the updated legislations about veterinary professional services and use them as necessary.
 12-  Be aware of the issues of environment, veterinary public health, biosecurity and zoonoses.
 13-  With awareness of the needs of the country and regions, offer the solutions and treatment options in veterinary services by using scientific technique and methods.
 14-  Distinquish the structural, functional (anatomical, histological, biochemical, etc) and behavioral characteristics of animal species and breeds.
 15-  Effectively use information and communication technologies and at least one computer software.
 16-  Comprehend events, thoughts and principles in the rise and development process of modern Turkey.
 17-  Demonstrate skills and tools necessary to promote life-long learning
Occupational Profiles of Graduates

The occupational profiles of the graduates contain:
Professional readiness and level of professional adaptability to conditions and requirements from the practice or basic professional education as the precondition for the follow-up departmental study in Veterinary medicine.

Access to Further Studies

After completing the first and second cycle degree program, it is possible to continue further studies in the third cycle degree program that can last up to 5 years. The graduates are awarded as PhD title.

Examination Regulations, Assesment and Grading

All exams and other activities are graded based on 100 points. The midterm and final exams represent 40% and 60% of the final grade, respectively. However, a student who gets a grade below 30 out of 100 is graded as FF. A student obtaining one of the grades of (AA), (BA), (BB), (CB), (CC), (G), and (B) is considered successful in that course. To enter exams, students must meet following requirements that are specifically outlined in “Mehmet Akif Ersoy University Regulation for Vocational and Undergraduate Education and Examination”:

a) Enrolment for the course in question,
b) At least 70% attendance of the course,
c) At least 80% attendance of the practices in the course,
d) Successfully completing practical projects.
Other matters related to learning and exams are given in “Mehmet Akif Ersoy University Regulation for Vocational and Undergraduate Education and Examination”.

Grade conversion is carried out from the 100 grade scale into the Letter grade scale and 4 point grade scale using the table given below for Bachelor’s Degree Programs at Mehmet Akif Ersoy University.

Graduation Requirements

Students at Faculty of Veterinary Medicine are subject to the following sets of graduation requirements:
1.Requirements imposed upon all undergraduate students in the University
2.Requirements for all students in the College of Veterinary Medicine,
All of these will be satisfied by completing the requirements in a period of no more than 16 semesters, including semesters at other universities.

Farklı hayvan türleri, yetiştirme şekilleri ve beklenen verim özellikleri doğrultusunda sağlıklı yetiştiricilik için bakım-beslenme alternatiflerini belirler ve amaca uygun besleme programları hazırlar.

Kuramsal olarak belirlenen bakım-besleme protokollerini hazırlar ve kullanır.
Hayvanlarda olması muhtemel her türlü hastalığı klinik olarak tanır, bu amaca yönelik olarak tanı yöntemlerini kullanır, gerektiğinde tanı materyallerini alır ve yetkili laboratuarlara gönderir ve/veya test eder, hekimliğin tüm yöntemlerini kullanarak (tanı yöntemleri sonuçlarını yorumlama, ilaç ya da operatif uygulamalar gibi) tanısı konulan hastalıkların tedavisini yapar.
Bulaşıcı hastalıkların kontrolü amacıyla biyogüvenlik dâhil gerekli önlemleri alır.
İnsan tüketimi için üretilen hayvansal gıdaların ve/veya bileşiminde hayvansal ürün bulunan gıdaların üretimlerini denetler ve tüketime sunulan nihai gıda maddelerinin sağlık kontrolünü yapar.
Veteriner hekimliği eğitimi süresince edindiği bilgileri kullanarak ve temel hekimlik ilkelerini gözeterek, hayvancılık işletmeleri, hayvansal gıda üretimi yapan işletmeleri yönetir.
İşletme ve bölge düzeyinde özellikleri göz önünde bulundurarak, ekonomik yetiştiricilik için gerekli uygulamaları yapar.
