Social Studies Teacher Education Program
Qualification Awarded

Students are awarded with bachelor's degree within the First Cycle Programmes of Social Sciences Education upon successful completion of all the requirements in the curriculum program and fulfilling all other requirements for graduation.

Level of Qualification

The students get bahelor's degree from the First Cycle Programmes of Social Sciences Education and graduate as 'social studies teacher'.

Objectives

The objectives of the program are to educate students who;

are able to carry out a field-related study which requires expertise, have the skill of analyzing the theoretical knowledge and its reflections in practice, make interpretations of the knowledge arising from the integration between the field and the information gaining from different disciplines and are able to supply new information, possess and are able to develop the theoretical and practical knowledge at expert-level in an education science field. are able to build a problem independently in their field of expertise, develop and come up with a solution, evaluate the results and put this whole progress into practice if the case occurs.    

Specific Admission Requirements

Students' admission to higher education is based on a nation-wide Student Selection Examination (ÖSS). The examination is held once in a year and is administered by the Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM). Candidates gain access to institutions of higher education based on their composite scores consisting of the scores on the selection examination and their high school grade point averages

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

The students who enrolled in our university have the right to request the recognition of their prior-achieved-courses taken at different universities. For this recognition of the prior-achieved-courses, they should submit their transcripts and course contents to the relevant department in the first semester of their registration year.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The requirement of getting Bachelor's Degree is completing 240 ECTS successfully. Maximum period for students to complete First Cycle Program is 7 years.

Profile of The Programme

Department of Social Studies Education graduate program, aiming to educate individuals with academic and vocational qualifications, consists of courses related to field information, general culture and pedagogical formation. The standard of education and training duration of program is 4 year. However, in some cases this period may vary. The students whose General Point Average 3.00 or plus may take course from upper class and may graduate a semester early but the students do not competence lessons may graduate up to 7 years. The program includes theoretical and practical courses. Theoretical lessons are conducted in classrooms of the Department and it is supported by travels and observations on the issue. The place may vary where the practical courses done depending on lecturer' preference or purpose of lesson. For example, while Community Service course is doing in various social organizations and institutions working in İstanbul, school experiences course is doing only in primary schools. The students fulfilling the terms of program may benefit from receiving an upper class courses, entering minor or double major program. If they enter the double major program, they receive two diplomas. All of these other, master and PhD programs are conducted by Department depending on Institute of Education Sciences.

Program Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of this program, the students will be able to;
 1-  Students will acquire basic knowledge and skills concerning disciplines that are included in Social Studies.
 2-  Students use scientific research methods and techniques in activities related with career development.
 3-  Students will be able to plan and design a learning environment in keeping with the curriculum in teaching process.
 4-  Students will effectively use strategies, methods and techniques for social studies education.
 5-  Students will be aware of the social-political, economic and cultural developments and acquire skills towards explaining these developments.
 6-  Students will know and use major tools and new education technologies directed towards social studies education.
 7-  Students will have a general culture level which provides their consistent improvement towards unstable requirements.
 8-  Students will be able to raise awareness of pupils about the main elements and processes of Turkish history, culture, protection and development of cultural heritage.
 9-  Students will be provided with an undestanding of the main elements and processes which construct world history.
 10-  Students will be able to give pupils a perception of the interaction between the human being and the environment in local and global levels.
 11-  Students will be able to have pupils comprehend the effect of economic activities and developments on societies.
 12-  Students will encourage pupils to comprehend the main factors upon which the Ataturk principles and reforms are based ; the meaning of the Turkish reform history and the effects these had on the political, social and cultural development of society.
 13-  Students will be aware of the concept of a democratic society and human rights and which people get inborn and responsibilites towards individuals, society and humanity.
 14-  Students will be able to channel self development and career development with Social Studies education.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates

The occupational profiles of the graduates contain the futures below:
-Professionally readiness, adaptation to different conditions professionally and practically or basicly professional education that is the precondition for the follow-up teaching or departmental study of social sciences.

Access to Further Studies

After completing the first cycle degree programme (bachelor's degree), it is possible to continue further studies in the second cycle degree programme (master's degree) that can last up to 2 years. The graduates are awarded as Master title.

Examination Regulations, Assesment and Grading

 Each student must attend the courses, applied studies, projects, seminars, workshops, graduation projects and other studies of the semester she/he is enrolled for. Students who have not attended at least 30% of the theoretic courses and 20% of the laboratory practices are not allowed to take the final exam. Once the student fulfills the attendance requirements in courses, no attendance is required if the course is repeated later. Examinations are generally in written form. However, the instructor of the course may decide to conduct the exam in the form of an oral exam, project or assignment on condition that she/he states it on the course information form (syllabus). Examinations are arranged and conducted by the instructors who give the courses. An excuse examination is given to students with certified excuses accepted by the relevant executive board within fifteen days after the whole final examinations are completed.                                                                                                           

 

Graduation Requirements

Students who are enrolled in the program ensure that certain conditions in order to gratude. Some of these are as follows:

*Continue to theoritical and practical courses in the curriculum.

*Cumulative grade point avarage must be at least 2.00.

*Complete lesson, practice and teaching internship successfully in accordance with the regulation.

*Complete 240 ECTS.
