Mathematics Teaching Program(Primary Mathematics Teacher Education Department)
Qualification Awarded

Students are awarded with a First Cycle Degree in Mathematics Teaching Program upon successful completion of all the requirements in the curriculum programme and fulfilling all other requirements for graduation.

Objectives

The main aim of this programme is to equip students with the basic knowledge, skills and competency to become effective teachers in the primary education system. The programs also envisage providing students with knowledge beyond their own subject area, enabling them to take on roles in various aspects of primary education.

Specific Admission Requirements

Students' admission to higher education is based on a nation-wide Graduate Placement Examination (LYS). The examination is held once in a year and is administered by the Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM). Candidates gain access to institutions of higher education based on their composite scores consisting of the scores on the selection examination and their high school grade point averages.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

The students of our university have the right to request the recognition of their prior learning at different universities. For the recognition of their prior learning, they should submit their transcript and course contents to the relevant department in the first semester of their registration year.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The requirements for getting First Cycle Degree;

1. to complete 240 credit hours,

2. to take all required courses and be successful in these courses,

3. to score a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of not less than 2.00 / 4.00

Maximum study period to receive First Cycle Degree is 7 years.

Profile of The Programme

Mahhematics teaching program was founded in the academic year 2005-2006 as the Süleyman Demirel University. Burdur Education Faculty of Mahhematics teaching program. Mahhematics teaching program accepted its first students in the academic year 2005-2006 . The program started the education with 31 students in Bucak.  Then, the program joined to Mehmet Akif Ersoy University that was founded in March 17th 2006, according to law number 5467, and the program was located into main campus in July 2007.  The program  was relocated into İstiklal campus in July 2012 and continues the education.

The number of the students in the program is 183. There are a total of 2 teaching staffs (2 Asst. Prof. Dr.), and 1 lecturer, 2 res. assistants currently working full time under program. By utilizing all the facilities of the modern education, we are working to provide our students with an education level that competes with the other national and international universities. Our faculty graduates are being employed in the Public and Private Sector.


Program Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of this program, the students will be able to;
 1-  Have general information about basic concept, theory and applications on mathematics
 2-  Understand and analyze the concepts and processes related to mathematic learning and teaching
 3-  Have the sufficient level of knowledge about Mathematics Teaching in order to meet the needs of students
 4-  Classify a problem systematically also improve fast, understandable and practical methods to create comprehensible, understandable and objective solutions
 5-  Apply the most suitable instructions, strategies, methods, and techniques by taking into consideration the developmental characteristics and individual differences of students, as well as the features of the study field
 6-  Have the pedagogical knowledge about teaching profession and know and apply contemporary teaching methods and techniques and measurement-assessment methods
 7-  Evaluate development and learning of students, provide to evaluate self-assessment and other students. Use the assessment results to better instruction; share the results with student, parent, administrators and teachers
 8-  Have the skill of using information and communication technology effectively for mathematics teaching
 9-  Execute interdisciplinary studies, have enough level of knowledge of Turkish, biology, medicine, mathematics, media, art and fields like these to be able to relate his/her course with other different disciplines
 10-  Act in accordance with democracy, human rights, social, scientific, and professional ethical values
 11-  Have the skills of establishing healthy communication with students and colleagues and use Turkish fluently and correctly according to its rules
 12-  Have the sufficient level of foreign language knowledge in order to monitor foreign resources about his/her field
 13-  Have skills of thinking scientific and analytic and use knowledge generating, knowledge acquiring, scientific research methods and techniques and use it in classroom activities
 14-  Know and apply approach, aim, goal, principle and techniques of teaching program on special field with basic value and principles of Turkish National Education System
 15-  Get life long learning behaviour
Occupational Profiles of Graduates

Graduates can work in primary schools as mathematics teachers.

Access to Further Studies

After completing the first cycle degree programme, it is possible to continue further studies in the second cycle degree programme that can last up to 2 years. The graduate are awarded with Master title. Successful second cycle degree holders can enlist to the third cycle degree programmes.

Examination Regulations, Assesment and Grading

Each student must attend the courses, applied studies, laboratories, projects, seminars, workshops, graduation projects and other studies of the semester s/he is enrolled for. Students who have not attended at least 70 % of theoretical courses and 80 % of applied and laboratory studies are not allowed to take the final exam of those courses. Once the student fulfilles the attendance requirements in theoretical courses, no attendance is required if the course is repeated later. Examinations are generally in written form. However, the instructor of the course may decide to conduct the exam in the form of an oral exam, project or assignment on condition that s/he states it on the course information form (syllabus). Examinations are arranged and conducted by the instructors teaching the courses. A make-up exam is given to students with certified excuses accepted by the relevant executive board within make-up exams week after the final examinations are over.

All exams and other activities are graded based on 100 points. The midterm and final exams represent 40% and 60% of the final grade, respectively. However, a student who gets a grade below 30 out of 100 is graded as FF. A student obtaining one of the grades of (AA), (BA), (BB), (CB), (CC), (G), and (B) is considered successful in that course. To enter exams, students must meet following requirements that are specifically outlined in “Mehmet Akif Ersoy University Regulation for Vocational and Undergraduate Education and Examination”:

a)Enrolment for the course in question, 
b)At least 70% attendance of the course, 
c)At least 80% attendance of the practices in the course, 
d)Successfully completing practical projects. 
Other matters related to learning and exams are given in “Mehmet Akif Ersoy University Regulation for Vocational and Undergraduate Education and Examination”.

Grade conversion is carried out from the 100 grade scale into the Letter grade scale and 4 point grade scale using the table given below for Bachelor’s Degree Programs at Mehmet Akif Ersoy University.

  *A student with a (DC) or (DD) grade is considered successful if s/he had a yearly Grade Point Average (GPA) of minimum 1.8 in the given year.

Graduation Requirements

Students at Faculty of Education are subject to the following sets of graduation requirements: 

1.Requirements imposed upon all undergraduate students in the university.
2.Requirements for all students in the Faculty of Education, all of these will be satisfied by completing the requirements in a period of no more than 14 semesters, including semesters at other universities.
