Social Studies Education Master Thesis Program
Qualification Awarded

Students are awarded with a Second Cycle Degree in Social Sciences Education upon successful completion of all the requirements in the curriculum programme and fulfilling all other requirements for graduation.

Objectives
The aim of Social Studies Teacher Thesis Master Program  is to train of specialists in knowledge, skill and competence related to social studies, their work in the level of specialist and their leadership of the other colleagues. It is aimed that the specialists to be trained would be individuals having quality to work in private sector. Upon successful completion of the programme, the student;Possesses and develops the theoretical and practical knowledge at expert level obtained from the field of education.Builds a problem independently in the field of expertise, develops ways of solution, comes up with a solution, evaluates the results and puts the mentioned progress into practice should the case occur.Reviews the field specific knowledge in a critical way and orientates learning.Makes use of specific computer software as a necessity of the field together with information and communication technologies at an advanced level. Collects, interprets and pronounces the field related data on the basis of scientific and ethical values together with teaching these values.      

Specific Admission Requirements

1)Students must have license certificate or certificate that equivalence is accepted by YOK from the faculty of foreign countries or high schools.
2)Students must get 55 standard points from ALES or they must get the equivalent points from GRE or GEMAT exams.
3) They must take the examinations of KPDS or UDS.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

The students of our University have the right to request the recognition of their prior learning at different universities. For the recognition of their prior learning, they should submit their transcript and course contents to the relevant department in the first semester of their registration year.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The requirements for getting Second Cycle Degree are to complete 120 ECTS credit hours as diveded below and to fulfill all other requirements for graduation.
a)30 Credit hours covering 4 compulsory courses as detailed in the curriculum.
b)30 Credit hours covering 4 optional courses as detailed in the curriculum.
c)Maximum study period to receive Second Cycle Degree is 4 years.

Profile of The Programme

Social Studies Teacher Thesis Master Program aims to grow students enrolled as individuals with academic and vocational qualification, teachers or researchers converting his/her knowledge into practice, use of scientific research methods, being independent in the classroom and outside the classroom; having academic qualification, reaching knowledge, solving problem and could overcome from complex situation which faced in the field of education. To achieve these goals, content knowledge and general culture courses as well as scientific research lessons referring to research students are also included. Almost all the courses have organized in accordance with new methods and techniques that students can make scientific research. The standard of education and training program is 2 years. The first years of this time period is the course period and the second year of this time period is the thesis period. However, this can vary in some cases. Theoretical courses in the program carried out in the seminar halls, classes and laboratories of the Department of Social Studies Teacher Education in the Faculty of Education located in the same campus with the Institute of Social Studies Teacher Education. Theoretical lessons are not confined only classroom activities. Students guided to field by lecturers to make an observations, excursions investigation on the subject processed research. Our master students, already, have offered a lot of papers in national and international conferences, they have written articles. It is an example of their success that they caught it in a short time. Our master students are guided to variety of primary schools and are supported to do independent research as relevant to their theme by lecturers. Students who have completed the first phase of the program and have passed all courses can pass the period of the thesis. The students have the opportunity to work on any issue with any advisor his or her thesis. 

Program Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of this program, the students will be able to;
 1-  Gets knowledge about the Social Studies education, in master level.
 2-  Comprehends the interaction between disciplines which contructs the Social Studies course
 3-  Use the theoritical and practical knowledge in master level
 4-  Creates new knowledge through integrating knowledge of different disciplines in her/his working area
 5-  Solve problems through scientific research methods
 6-  Constructs a problem in her/his research field, develops and applies it’s solution method independently
 7-  Develops new strategical approaches towards not foreseen and complex situations that s/he may encounter in Social Studies working area and produces solutions related with them
 8-  Evaluates knowledges related with her/his working area, directs her/his learning and becomes perfect in the context of research, independently
 9-  Transfers curent developments and her/his studies about the Social Studies in written, oral and visual ways and in different levels
 10-  Evaluates social relationships and norm related with them, develops them amd attemtps for their change when it is needed
 11-  Protects societal, scientific and ethic values in data collection, interpretation and reporting
 12-  Use knowledge related with the Social Studies and problem solving skills in interdisciplinary studies
 13-  Develops strategy, policy and implementation plans related with the Social Studies topics abd evaluates their results in the context of quality processes
Occupational Profiles of Graduates

Graduates of Social Studies Teacher Education Second Cycle programme have scientific knowledge and skills to conduct researches related to their field. They can work in the public and private elementary schools which are connected to the National Education Ministry. They can work in academic units to conduct research and developments in different dimensions of Social Studies Teacher Education.

Access to Further Studies

After completing the second cycle degree programme, it is possible to continue further studies in the post-graduate study that can last up to 4-6 years. The graduates are awarded as Doctor title.

Examination Regulations, Assesment and Grading

The programme are subject to the following sets of graduation requirements:
1. Requirements for all students in the Social Sciences Institute
2. Requirements for all students in the programme. All of these will be satisfied by completing the requirements in a period of no more than 6 semesters, including semesters at other universities.

Students should:

  • successfully complete at least 7 different graduate courses from the following list offered below,
  •  have totally minimum of 21 national credits, (60 ECTS credits, including graduate seminar)
  • take special studies course on the thesis subject, (20 ECTS credits),
  • prepare and defende thesis, (40 ECTS credits),
  • obtain a cumulative grade point average of at least 70 on a 100 scale.
