Qualification Awarded

Students are awarded with a First Cycle Degree in English Language Teaching Program successful completion of all the requirements in the curriculum programme and fulfilling all other requirements for graduation.

Level of Qualification

First Cycle Degree

Objectives
To train and educate prospective English teachers for institutions of elementary, secondary, and higher education.
To enhance creative thinking skills to design, adapt and develop educational materials.
To provide students gain analytical approaches in using and evaluating texts according to the students
To apply teaching principles for emboldening students to cope with problems to be encountered in classes

Specific Admission Requirements

Students' admission to higher education is based on a nation-wide Student Selection Examination (ÖSS). The examination is held once in a year and is administered by the Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM). Candidates gain access to institutions of higher education based on their language scores consisting of the scores on the selection examination and their high school grade point averages.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

The students of our English Language Teaching Department have the right to request the recognition of their prior learning at different universities. For the recognition of their prior learning, they should submit their transcript and course contents to the relevant department in the first semester of their registration year.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The requirements for getting First Cycle Degree are to complete (240) ECTS credit hours as diveded below and to fulfill all other requirements.
a.(234) Credit hours covering (55) compulsory courses as detailed in the curriculum.
b.(6) Credit hours covering (2) optional courses as detailed in the curriculum.
c.Maximum study period to receive Second Cycle Degree is 7 years.

Profile of The Programme

English Language Teaching was founded in 2005. In our department, today, there are two assistant professors, one teaching assistant and two research assistants. English Language Teaching is teaching courses on the undergraduate level. Student-teachers of English Language Teaching Department are trained in English Language Teaching Department of Burdur Education Faculty of Mehmet Akif Ersoy University about subjects of English education. Education-instruction process lasts for four years.That education programme includes field courses, courses of teaching formation, History of Atatürk’s Principles and Revolution, Second Foreign language, Turkish and general culture. Each course consists of researh, investigation and seminar studies.

After successful completion of this program, the students will be able to;
 1-  Estimate the nature, source, reliability and validity of information,
 2-  Comprehend the methods about the production of knowledge,
 3-  Are aware of social and professional responsibilities,
 4-  Can express their ideas in their daily and professional life independently ,
 5-  Act in accordance with democracy, human rights, social, scientific, and professional ethical values,
 6-  Comprehend English at an advanced level,
 7-  Use language learning strategies effectively,
 8-  Discover different written and oral texts they encounter in their daily and professional life,
 9-  Create different texts by using the writing process effectively,
 10-  Use both Turkish and English fluently and correctly according to their rules,
 11-  Distinguish the concepts related to language and the relationship between these concepts,
 12-  Analyze the characteristics, structure and mechanism of language,
 13-  Acquire a high-level knowledge of English Teaching,
 14-  Get the skills of establishing healthy communication with students and colleagues,
 15-  Produce alternative solutions when they face with unexpected and complicated cases in applications of pedagogical knowledge and teaching professions,
 16-  Apply contemporary teaching methods and techniques and measurement-assessment methods to teaching process,
 17-  Interpret written and oral works from Turkish to English, and from English to Turkish,
 18-  Attend social, cultural and artistic activities about English or other fields,
 19-  Locate life long learning concept in their minds,
 20-  Gain professional confidence,
Occupational Profiles of Graduates

Students that graduate from this department work at primary schools,high schools, and colleges.

Access to Further Studies

After completing the first cycle degree programme, it is possible to continue further studies in the second cycle degree programme that can last up to two years. The graduates are awarded as Expert in their field.

Examination Regulations, Assesment and Grading

Each student must attend the courses, applied studies, projects, seminars and other studies of the semester s/he is enrolled for. Students who have not attended at least 30% of theoretical courses are not allowed to take the final exam of those courses. Once the student fulfilles the attendance requirements in theoretical courses, no attendance is required if the course is repeated later.
The Mid-term and Final Examinations are generally in written form. However, the instructor of the course may decide to conduct the exam in the form of an oral exam, project or assignment on condition that s/he states it on the course information form (syllabus). Examinations are arranged and conducted by the instructors teaching the courses. Make-up exams, final exams after the date set by the faculty and board of directors is made.
A course final grade calculation, with 40% of midterm exams 60% calculate the final exam is determined. CC is the passing grade. To be successful in a course final exam to take at least 51 are required.

Graduation Requirements

English Language Teaching Department major is subject to the following graduation requirements:
1. To be succesful in the the elective and compulsory courses defined in the curriculum which is 240 ECTS.
2. To graduate from the program, GPA must be at least 2.00 (CC).
